WHAT IS SHIATSU
Shiatsu literally translated means “finger pressure”. It is a holistic therapy that is designed to improve overall health of the body by applying pressure (utilising the thumb) to specific points on the body called “Tsubos”. These zones on the body are where nerves, blood, lymph, and the ductless glands of the endocrine system are concentrated or branch.
Pressure is applied utilising the thumb to a specific area of pain to help diffuse the build-up of lactic acid and to stimulate the flow of blood and lymph. It is highly effective in the relief of inflammation and stiffness in muscles and joints, while alleviating pressure on the surrounding nerves. The result is pain releasing relief.
NAMIKOSHI SHIATSU:
The shiatsu that is utilised in our clinic is based on the teachings and principles of Takurijo Namikoshi, the founder of Shiatsu therapy who famously worked on Marylin Monroe for insomnia and Muhammed Ali during his combat training in Pennsylvania. Namikoshi died at the age of 94 in the year 2000, leaving behind his legacy that had spread across the world with great success.
Over the extensive years of my practice with this incredible therapy, I have found it to be highly effective, with incredible results. To further enhance the results of treatment, I have also included the use of various massage techniques.
ALTHOUGH A LARGE RANGE OF AILMENTS CAN BE ALLEVIATED USING SHIATSU, WE SPECIALISE IN THE FOLLOWING TREATMENT:
- Relief of stress and anxiety
- Relief of hypotension and hypertension
- Relief of cervical, thoracic, lumber and sacrial backpain (mild to chronic)
- Relief of sciatic pain (mild to chronic)
- Relief of pain to stiff and injured muscles
- Relief of pain to stiff and painful joints
SHIATSU TREATMENT:
The number of sessions necessary for treatment will depend on the severity of the ailment. E.g., Treatment for anxiety or hypertension may require 1 to 2 treatments but longstanding, years of sciatic pain may require a few more sessions. An evaluation of the ailment will be done prior to treatment. Shiatsu treatment is combined with massage therapy to enhance the flow of blood and lymph.
Treatment duration is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes long. Pressure points may be sensitive but pain releasing. The degree of pressure applied to everyone will vary, depending on the severity of the ailment as well the needs of the individual. It is essential during treatment to try and maintain a state of relaxation.
MASSAGE
Massage in our clinic is done on a Therapeutic, Rejuvenation and Rehabilitative level.
Various massage techniques are used during a treatment, ranging from soft tissue, lighter strokes, to deep tissue and trigger point massage.
Soft Tissue Massage: This is a softer touch massage, with smoother longer strokes. It is used mostly for relaxation and rehabilitation of the body. It is a soothing form of massage, to target a fatigued body. It restores the body, relieves stress and encourages the body’s regeneration of it’s natural restorative power. It is excellent for bringing the body back into balance.
Lymph drainage massage: Soft tissue massage is used on specific parts of the body to encourage the flow of lymphatic fluid in the direction of the lymph nodes, to filter toxins. This massage is excellent for swelling and the breaking down of fat cells. It also assists the filtering of pathogens from the blood.
Deep Tissue massage: Gradual and more intense massage strokes are used to target the deeper layers of the muscle and connective tissue. It is used specifically to reduce muscle tension and treat injuries. It is excellent for the recovery from vigorous exercise or physical stress exerted on the body. Deep tissue massage is effective for the overall maintenance and rehabilitation of the body, particularly for athletes and is very effective for stress relief.
Sports massage: Deep tissue massage is used here, with the emphasis on increasing blood flow to the muscle fibres, to release muscle tension and increase flexibility. It is an excellent injury preventative form of massage. Sports massage is also used as a very targeted approach to treating minor and major sports injuries and will quite often involve tigger point massage. Trigger points are knots in the muscle that cause referred pain to other parts of the body. Thumbs and fingertips are mostly used to diffuse these knots. Sports massage will often focus on trigger points and specific injuries as well as the rehabilitation of the body as a whole. The needs of each client is discussed prior to the treatment.
